Recognising 150 Years of Aviation Innovation

The Chief of Air Force, Air Marshal Leo Davies, will today join the Royal Aeronautical Society in celebrating 150 years of service to the aeronautical community, including 89 years in Australia.

Air Marshal Davies said it was important to recognise how far aviation had come in a short time, and the role that both Air Force and industry personnel played in creating those achievements through innovation.

“Innovation has always been integral to the development of air power. Celebrating 150 years is a significant achievement and provides an opportunity to take stock and reflect on just how much aviation has evolved.

“For Air Force, innovation is an inherent part of our DNA and I rely on our airmen to improve the Force from the ‘bottom up’. Innovation can’t just be directed from the top, but we can provide an environment and culture that encourages innovation hand-in-hand with our industry and development partners.

“Through Plan Jericho, we are creating the right environment for every member of the Air Force to be innovative and seek new ways of doing business,” Air Marshal Davies said.

Plan Jericho empowers the Air Force workforce to transform into an agile, 5th generation force, and focuses on empowering staff to deliver networked capabilities that can prevail across the spectrum of air, space, electromagnetic and cyber domains.

“For Air Force to be successful in the future Joint Force, innovation will be embedded in our daily work and we will continue to push the technological boundaries through the recruitment and retention of the very best people Australia has to offer,” Air Marshal Davies said.

Tonight’s Royal Aeronautical Society event is in honour of Ian Bowman Fleming, OBE, a notable Australian who had a long aviation engineering career, across a range of aircraft including Boomerang, Jindivik, Mirage, Macchi, Kiowa and Nomad aircraft; and the Ikara and Turana missiles.
