Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicles Australia assists Australian civilian tanker manufacturer to enter defence supply chain

Brisbane-based company Holmwood Highgate has been awarded a contract to design and manufacture a total of 276 integrated tankers, bulk water and bulk fuel modules under the Australian Army’s Land 121 Phase 3B program after a competitive tender process overseen by prime contractor Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicles Australia (RMMVA).

The contract is worth over $65 million, has already led to the creation of 9 new positions and is expected to further secure at least 40 jobs at Holmwood Highgate’s Loganholme facilities. More importantly, Holmwood Highgate will develop a new product as a result of this contract to add to its already substantial product portfolio.

Holmwood Highgate will design and manufacture 22 integrated fuel tankers which will be installed on the RMMV 8x8 high mobility chassis, 123 ISO compatible modular water tanks some including pumps to dispense water and 131 ISO compatible fuel tanks some equipped with pumps, filters and nozzles to enable refuelling and distribution of fuel to land vehicles and aircraft. All modules are fully compatible with RMMV’s high mobility HX77 Integrated Load Handling (ILH) vehicles upon which they will be carried.

Holmwood Highgate’s primary customer base is commercial quality aluminium and steel road tankers. With little recent exposure to the demands of the Defence procurement and engineering processes, RMMVA have actively assisted Holmwood Highgate with the systems engineering, project management and system verification requirements associated with Defence procurement.

Peter Hardisty, Managing Director RMMVA, who is keen to exploit the synergies between the civilian and defence markets, believes that strengthening the long term viability and international competitiveness will benefit the Australian economy and ADF in the long term.

“Holmwood Highgate is a successful supplier of tankers to the petroleum, bitumen and chemical industries. With our practical assistance, Holmwood Highgate is again in the process of becoming a valuable Defence supplier after having left that sector 25 years ago.”

Holmwood Highgate has successfully passed a number of engineering activities including a several design reviews, all of which are scheduled to be concluded by December 2016.
RMMVA secured the Land 121 Phase 3B contract in 2013 to supply the Commonwealth of Australia with over 2,500 medium and heavy military logistic trucks and nearly 3,000 modules.
