Defence in NSW

With Australia’s most comprehensive industrial base, NSW industry is integrated into local and international defence supply chains. The diverse capabilities offered by the State’s small-medium enterprises (SME) are essential to Australian defence requirements.

These capabilities extend across the Land, Sea, Air and Joint domains. They can be found in Sydney and various regional centres. The defence industry in Sydney encompasses the industrial heartland of Western Sydney, the naval capabilities and infrastructure at Garden Island, and world leading IT and system integration capabilities in the Macquarie Park/North Ryde corridor.

NSW has a large skilled work force, an established Defence Force presence with over 80 defence sites, world-leading research and development and exceptional standards of education and training.

The Hunter region, north of Sydney, boasts a significant defence and aerospace industry presence based around RAAF Williamtown - home to Australia’s current and future fast jet fleet including the Joint Strike Fighter, with DMO operating three Systems Program Offices in the region as well. The Hunter has a strong industrial base, with capabilities in aerospace repair, maintenance and overhaul, electronics, manufacturing, ship building and repair and training.

The Shoalhaven region is home to HMAS Albatross, Australia’s naval aviation base, and has a long and proud history of supplying innovative defence technology and services to the Australian and global defence industries.

Industry in the Shoalhaven has a broad spectrum of capabilities including; design, manufacture and in-service support of mechanical and electronic systems, test regimes, simulation and training services, technical consultancy services and infrastructure design and construction.

Support for NSW companies

The NSW Department of Trade & Investment, Regional Infrastructure & Services (DTIRIS) works with companies to target new business, investment and job opportunities. We support local and international companies in several ways including assistance on major defence projects, access to national and global supply chains and support for business skills, innovation and export opportunities.

The Department often hosts industry briefings with the DMO and Prime contractors regarding Defence tenders and global opportunities. DTIRIS also provide assistance to Prime Contractors looking to develop local supply chains.

The NSW Government has programs to assist SMEs in preparing for export to foreign markets and has offices in Guangzhou and Shanghai, Abu Dhabi and Mumbai to support NSW companies access overseas opportunities.

DTIRIS has co-ordinated SME showcases at major trade shows including the Avalon Airshow and the Pacific International Maritime Exhibition, which have been highly successful in showcasing NSW talent to the industry.

The NSW Government has also supported NSW based companies participate on the Defence Materiel Organisation’s Defence & Industry Study Course. Four NSW companies are benefitting from State assistance this year.

The NSW Government also co-ordinates Small Business September, a series of workshops, seminars, exhibitions, awards and launches to help small companies manage and grow business. Approximately 450 small business events run during this period across the State.

Another important role that the Government plays is facilitating new projects that lead to new jobs and investment into the State.

Recent successes

DTIRIS has worked closely with NSW companies on recent major projects such as:
• assisting Quickstep Technologies establish an advanced composites facility at Bankstown Airport to produce components for the Joint Strike Fighter. This is potentially worth up $700 million and more than 400 jobs.
• supporting BAE Systems’ bid win the Interim Basic Flight Training program at Tamworth, which provides flight screening and training to the Australian Defence Force. This supports up to 135 jobs in regional NSW.
• helping Forgacs Engineering Group secure contracts to fabricate blocks for the Air Warfare Destroyer program.
