BAE Systems Australia welcomes today's announcement from the Minister for
Defence recognising the recent successful Hypersonic International Flight
Research Experimentation (HIFiRE) flight trial. We were pleased to
support the Defence Science and Technology (DST) Group with the
successful flight trial; the most complex of all HIFiRE flights conducted
to date, to further the fundamental scientific understanding of
hypersonic flight.
 
BAE Systems Australia's involvement in this research program leverages
our strong expertise and heritage in developing guidance, navigation and
control systems, which is the foundation of our weapon system and trusted
autonomous system capability. This flight trial is a significant step
forward in proving this technology and enhancing our collective
understanding of how it could be employed across a range of applications.

years developing and advancing technologies that are now a staple of the
Australian Defence Force. Technology has a clear role to play in creating
opportunities for economic growth as well as ensuring that we maintain a
capability edge in Defence and Security. Over the past five years we have
invested 260 million dollars in Australia on research and development*,
over four times more per employee than the rest of the Australian economy.
 
Internationally BAE Systems is working with Reaction Engines to
accelerate Reaction Engines' development of SABRET - a new aerospace
engine class that combines both jet and rocket technologies with the
potential to revolutionise hypersonic flight and the economics of space
access.
